Do you know

What is E-Waste and Why It Matters

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electronic devices that are no longer functional or have reached the end of their useful life. This includes items like computers, smartphones, TVs, and household appliances.

As technology evolves rapidly, products are often replaced before they fail, leading to an ever-increasing volume of discarded electronics. E-waste contains valuable materials like copper, aluminium, and rare earth metals. Still, it also harbours harmful substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can pose serious risks to the environment and human health if not disposed of properly.

By responsibly managing e-waste, we can recover these valuable materials, reduce environmental damage, and promote a sustainable future.

62 Million Tonnes

The world generated an astonishing 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022, equal to 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks—enough to circle the Earth nearly 2.5 times. This e-waste consists of devices we use daily, like phones, laptops, and appliances.

  1. India’s Contribution: India is the third-largest e-waste generator globally, producing 2 million tonnes annually, behind only China and the U.S.
  2. This is a 21% increase in just five years, highlighting the urgent need for responsible e-waste management.

Recycling Rates

Despite the rising e-waste crisis, only 22.3% of e-waste was formally collected and recycled globally in 2022.

  1. India’s Progress: The formal recycling rate in India has doubled in the past five years, reaching 4% in 2023, thanks to growing awareness and government regulations.
  2. The Potential: Proper recycling of e-waste could recover up to $57 billion worth of precious materials globally, including gold, silver, and copper.

With increased participation, recycling rates could rise significantly, reducing the environmental burden of e-waste.

Global Impact

Improper disposal of e-waste leads to environmental damage and health risks:

  1. 70% of toxic waste in landfills comes from discarded electronics.
  2. E-waste is responsible for releasing 50 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, significantly contributing to climate change.
  3. India’s Initiatives: Programs like Digital India and EPR regulations are helping curb the environmental impact by promoting formal e-waste management.
  4. By properly managing e-waste, the global community could prevent the equivalent of 15 million cars’ worth of CO₂ emissions annually.

Projected Growth

E-waste generation is projected to exceed 74 million tonnes by 2030, growing by 4% annually, driven by rapid technological advancements and shorter product lifecycles.

  • By 2025, India is expected to generate over 5 million tonnes of e-waste annually, accounting for nearly 10% of the global total.
  • A Call to Action: Without immediate action, this growth could overwhelm existing recycling infrastructures, posing a severe environmental and economic challenge.
  • Tackling this growth could create a $20 billion industry in India alone, generating jobs and supporting sustainable development.

Environmental & Health Risks

E-waste contains harmful substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can damage ecosystems and health if not recycled properly.

Economic Potential

Recovering materials from e-waste can reduce reliance on mining and significantly lower production costs for future tech

Why Proper Disposal is Crucial for IT & Telecom Businesses

1. Data Security: Devices like hard drives, servers, and mobile phones often contain sensitive data. Secure data destruction and decommissioning are essential to prevent data theft or leaks.

2. Regulatory Compliance: Businesses in IT and telecom must adhere to strict data protection and environmental standards (such as GDPR or EPR regulations) when disposing of old equipment.

3. Resource Recovery: IT and telecom equipment contains valuable materials like gold, copper, and rare earth elements that can be recovered and reused, reducing the need for new resources and supporting sustainability.
